What is RPM in New Google Adsense? How to Increase RPM?

New Adsense interface rolled out for all users recently. It looks promising and useful. I like it. This is the first time I’m seeing a different a interface after three years. It’s with more details and easy to understand format with graphs. There are some new factors make confusion in first screen. What is RPM in new Google Adsense interface? Its very simple, “Revenue Per Mile”.

It means, Revenue Per 1000 impressions. So what the difference between eCPM and RPM in adsense?. There is a difference. eCPM is calculated by Page impressions whereas RPM by ad impressions.

 RPM in New Google Adsense

Old AdSense interface shows the total page impressions with adsense ads, no matter how many blocks or units in it. But, latest interface shows the total number of ad impressions and RPM is according to it.

For example,

You have 3 ad blocks on each page and one day you earned 20$ with 10000 Page impressions.

So, average eCPM is = 2$

(Earnings/Page Impressions) * 1000 =  (20$/10000)*1000

What’s the RPM in this case?

New interface will show 30000 impressions, because each 10000 pages got 3 ad blocks.

So average RPM is = 0.67$

(Earnings/Ad Impressions)*1000 = (20$/30000)*1000

Need some prove?

Here is the stats from new interface for today.

 RPM in New Google Adsense

For same, old interface shows as below.

Increase adsense RPM

I have three ad blocks on each posts except home and other pages. That’s the different. So, page eCPM and RPM are totally different amounts for me.

I’m sure this will give some idea. I could see in other blogs that they say RPM in adsense is calculated by number of visitors and page views, but actually its from ad impressions.

How to Increase RPM in Adsense?

It can be done in two ways.

1) Reduce the number of ads (not performing) on your blog. Of course it will reduce the earnings, but RPM will be increased.

2) Increase your earnings with same impressions.

Check the 9 reasons for making money from adsense is difficult nowadays, but you can make it.

Quick & Simple tips to improve the earnings. ( I will be covering all points in detail very soon)

1) Above the fold.

2) Don’t place all ads in same screen when your reader is reading.

3) Don’t blend too much with your theme style. Let them know it’s a link and ad.

4) Consider to improve Search Engine traffic.

5) Block the un related ads

6) Remove the ads which is appearing in all slots. ( they are paying less)

7) Try the recommended ad size formats. Do not try anything new with new ad sizes.

8.) Use section targeting.

9) Experiment and test, but don’t decide anything quickly. Give minimum one week.

10) Insert high paying keywords in your blog related to content.

  • Nice article. Your points are worth considering. I have several times heard about using high paying keywords, please tell me some good sources from where I can get these high paying keywords.

    • Welcome to my blog Namit Gupta,

There are few collection of high paying keyword in several forums. But, it will be different from our blogs’ niche.
The easy method I use is, Google keyword tool. It will give idea of high paying keyword related to your each blog post.
You do not need to target that keyword for your SEO (because it will have competition already), but you can insert it in a post.

  • i have few ad slots which earn less way less then other slots but I am not removing them just because at the end of the month they still earn something for me so I need a good reason for removing them

    • Thats a good point raybak.
One more thing, when you have more ad slots, you may get low paying ads too. So, sometimes your CTR will be wasted.
anyhow, its good to keep maximum ad slots, depends on blog style.

  • Hi Dinesh,

    • Rizwan,
      Yes, I checked your blog.
Just want to know, ” What you are planning to write in your blog?”, if the answer is ‘ Google adsense’, then you will have tough time. Its an old topic and covered every where.
I suggest to do a study on this niche and concentrate on any topic which covered less in internet.
You can contact me for further assistance.

      • i think you are right but visitors are coming to my blog very fast according to visitor locator i have made another blog on different type of photos like wallpapers ok and you can check it http://beautifulphotose.blogspot.com/ but i know that this is also will not get popular so much coz this is also an old topic. but tell me one thing can i wright from the books that i have, like about travel guide and about foods and life style and many more topics

  • Hi Dinesh,
Your information is not totally correct.

    According to http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/AdSense/thread?tid=74378e67f8bb2b0b&hl=en
    >>Note that if you are viewing ad impressions it gives you the RPM which is based on ad unit impressions/queries, if you are viewing Page Views it gives you Page RPM which is based on the number of page views instead of ad unit impressions. Therefore Page RPM is what was called Page eCPM in the old interface.

    • Anthony,
Thanks for your comment. I checked the link too.
Recently they changed the home page view in new adsense interface with Page level RPM, here is the part of email we received,

” We’ve changed the default metrics shown on the Home and
Performance reports pages based on strong feedback that most of you
prefer to view your earnings at the page level rather than by ad unit.
As a result, we’ve switched back to page level metrics, and those of
you who wish to see ad unit CTR and other ad unit level metrics can
now do so under the Performance reports tab. ”

So, now the RPM in new interface home page is same as eCPM in old interface.

  • Hi Dinesh,

    • Leon,
Thanks for the comment, I think I have received your email too.
I will respond to you, but I can’t open your blog, is it a correct address?

  • Great info, i have big RPM’s per click on my google ads, however on estimated earnings i only being credit lower amount, i have a descent traffic on my website: Funny Images Gallert

is there away to have higher pay-outs per click on Google Adsense? if so, can you please advise me? your help is much appreciated.

    • Hi,
RPM is an estimate amount that ‘You may earn’ if you make 1000 impressions with the way how its going now.
For example, if you make 2$ with 100 page impressions, then the RPM is 20$ ( (2$/100)*1000). But, if you made only 100 impressions like this in a day, your estimated earning is still 2$ even though RPM is 20$, because you have not made 1000 similar (same CTR and CPC) impressions.

You can try to increase the traffic, CPC, CTR to get higher payout from Google, check below post to increase Adsense CPC

      https://dailyblogmoney.com/must-read-how-to-increase-adsense-cpc-simple-tips

  • Thanks for your great tips.

I am wondering, on my site http://www.rosebushbeauty.com I was getting reasonable CPC like $0.75 or even above $1 a few days ago. Then, all of a sudden, I’m getting much lower CPC like 0.10 to 0.20. Needless to say, total income dropped by a factor of 5 to 10.

I didn’t make any changes. Do you have any ideas what is happening, and can I do anything about it ?

    Thanks.

    • Its normal in adsense. I’m not sure you are talking about which month, believe me I’m also facing the same situation from July beginning. I have not done any changes, but earnings dropped.
Its depends on the advertisers competition for your niche.
Most of the time we can’t do anything on this except watch the progress. I’m sure it will increase in coming days or months.
If nothing seems to be working, then you have to think for some changes or target high paying keywords.

  • Hi just wan know if there is need of increasing RPM or not????
If earning is high mean RPM will be high so might be good to increases it but at first point you say

“Reduce the number of ads (not performing) on your blog. Of course it will reduce the earnings, but RPM will be increased”

    What to be considered???
    tell me something about it.

    • Good questions.
If the RPM is more, that doesn’t mean the potential earning is more.

For example, You and I make 10$ daily from adsense. So both earnings are equal. But, I’m making this 10$ from 2000 page views and you are making with 1000 PVs. In this case, you are really performing well in adsense even though our final earning (money) is same. So, I must consider to increase the RPM to get more final income.

There are two types of publishers,
One want to make more money by losing anything including visitors, page loading time, displaying more ads…etc.
Send type, they also want to make money without losing so many things. For these people, reducing the number of ads and increasing the RPM will help.
For example, I make 5$ from 20 clicks and you make 4$ from 10 clicks. Though the earning is lessor for you, but you must be happy that you are not losing 10 visitors for 1 dollar.

In my personal opinion, the above examples mostly depend of RPM ( Revenue Per Mile). Less number of ads will server quality ads.
Hope, I have not confused you 🙂

  • Thanks for the post. I have seen that pasting your ad sense code in all sites may also cause low RPM.
So pasting code only on pages with high traffic and not on new or no traffic pages increases your RPM and also earnings.
Though it is easy to say RPM does have no effect on one’s earnings, I believe that RPM helps your readers get access to relevant ads. I.e. high RPM increases chances of relevant ads for the users to click. You can clearly see that the ad sense earnings are more on days with high RPM than vice-versa.

    Thanks……….

    • @Luishi,
      Thanks for the comment,
I meant to say if you see same ad in more than one ad slot (when you open your blog pages), it may give low CPC. You can consider to remove that.

  • First off, congrats on a good blog post.

I feel that Google made good with there new format, it is much easier to track units and figure out a problem.

Google is not for everyone though. Adsense in all respects is for a free-flowing high traffic website, the alternative for smaller sites until traffic picks up is AdBrite, for many reasons.

You can target as many keywords as you want, but these days advertisers are wise to the high paying keyword, in the past too much fraud went on with fraudulent clicks, thus reducing the value of RPM and PPC – no doubt there are a few good keywords but these are wasted on websites and forums with traffic under 1000 unique visitor hits per day (not page hit or total hits).

You can get an analysis of AdBrite here: http://articlechase.com/What-advertising-network-makes-the-most-revenue-.php

PLEASE PEOPLE DO NOT CLICK YOUR OWN GOOGLE ADS – IT RUINS IT FOR EVERYONE AND GETS YOU ONLY A TERMINATED GOOGLE ADSENSE ACCOUNT.

I need to say that because I cannot believe people still try the oldest trick in the book in clicking their own ads. Google are not stupid and have a lot of technology and human knowledge to catch you out.

  • I have to add that it matters not if you paste ads on too many sites – the simple fact of the matter is contextual adverts, and using the tools on offer such as using the various ad networks integrated within the API.

Contextual means that Google serve relevant ads to a page, you have NO CONTROL over what adverts are served. Too many people think that just because you use a keyword it will have high paying ads. WRONG – Ads consist of auctioned ads which are usually CPM and can be low. This includes PPC ads, there is such a broad spectrum which you as a webmaster cannot control.

For instance you might see an image advert for a top bank in an investment blog this may have a PPC of $1.00 but only a CPM of $0.10 – You will see on the next visit to the same page a text ad for a forex investment site, this may only have a CPM of $0.02 and no PPC.

You see how this is working?

The ONLY way is to have good unique genuine visitors, high traffic and good content – spammy sites are affected by RPM, CPM and PPC.
